The Bermuda Triangle cover

"The Bermuda Triangle"
Released in 2010
Instrospection Records

Remember those weird, ethereal and tribal instrumental songs on some of your favorite classic rock albums? The ones that ended off an album or side 1? The interesting ones that didn't fit in on there at all? Well, what if a band sustained that for a whole album?

Toning down the bleak, dark and claustrophobic atmosphere of their previous two releases, High Watt Electrocutions return with "The Bermuda Triangle", a 39 minute instrumental track/ album that turns down the fuzz guitars and menacing presence, while opting for an admittedly more optimistic and serene vibe. But it's not without eventual chaotic waters--this is, after all, the audio equivalent to the fabled area of the same name, where planes, ships and people vanish without a trace in clouds, water and a haze of confusion.

Built largely on layers of ringing guitars, acoustic guitars, pianos, synths and shimmering effects, the album doesn't so much hit you over the head with volume as it does density.....a wall of chiming, swooping atmospherics and percussion on a largely drum-less album that clicks instead of pounds away. Song movements fade in and out of each other with ease; the absence of vocals and lyrics challenge the listener to determine what they're hearing in the music, and challenges them as to where proposed song movements start and end (note: track sample clips are divided here at this website to illustrate how the album flows).

Based on a Middle Eastern theme, both musically and lyrically, it ups the tempo and aggression level of "Night Songs" ' heaviness, while increasing the mechanical, robotic feel of it's predecessor. Shorter, more concise and a bit less epic (but still epic nonetheless), the songs are at once more immediate and still melodic, never relying only on pure heaviness for it's sonic bludgeoning. "Desert Opuses" ' world is one of drum machines versus acoustic drums; tubes versus transistors; live performances versus studio effectation; eras past versus the future/ now. Sonic paranoia never sounded so good.

It is on translucent gold 140 gram vinyl (400 copies only), and includes one track not on the cd release, "The Desert Winds", and a different mix of "Obliteration" (not available via digital download/ cd, only by dropping the needle to the groove). Purchase of vinyl entitles one to a free coupon for a digital download of the release, including a track not on the vinyl, "Stripped Ruins".

Revolving around a dark sound, the critically acclaimed "Night Songs" is appropriately indebted to the night in spirit. With songs representing various times of the night, ending at "Sunrise" in the morning, it is an appropriately--and intentionally--bleak album with occasional shades of light and optimism. Combining a tribal attack merged with Phil Spector grandeur and spacy psychedelic sonics, it's slow Sabbath meets Spacemen 3 grind is both indirect and mechanical, yet alluring and oddly organic, revealing shades and textures rather than colors and obvious rock conventions.
