14/ 2010--Review of "The Bermuda Triangle" in Acid Dragon
(thanks to Phil Jackson):
"As AD
readers will know I was mightily impressed by Ryan Settee’s 2009
recording as HWE, ‘Desert Opuses’ and have been looking forward to
where Ryan would take his musical explorations in 2010. ‘The Bermuda
Triangle’ is one continuous track predominantly synth, retro sounding
keyboards, electric and acoustic guitar and programmed drumming and is
atmospheric and dreamlike without being overly demonstrative, If you’re
looking for rock outs or riffs then you will be disappointed but what
you do get is a considered, hypnotic, conceptual flowing piece of music
that repays repeated headphone listens. The blurb in the
www.highwattelectrocutions.com website asks the question, “Remember
those weird, ethereal and tribal instrumental songs on some of your
favorite classic rock albums, the ones that ended off an album or side
1, the interesting ones that didn't fit in on there at all? Well, what
if a band sustained that for a whole album?” And that pretty well sums
up the project similar in some respects to the music of Mike Oldfield
sustained over one 40 minute piece with different ‘movements’ running
into double figures according to my rough calculations. Limited to 500
copies with a variety of artwork on the sleeves ‘The Bermuda Triangle’
is a labour of love clearly worth investing in.
