4/ 2009--Review of "Desert Opuses" in Stylus
Magazine (thanks to Kent Davies):
"Ryan
Settee is High Watt Electrocutions, a local project that continues
to blow minds with a unique concoction of brooding, dark psych-rock.
Often joined by family and friends, Settee conducts and layers
countless chaotic mood sessions until they reach a form that is
satisfying. While HWE’s debut, Night Songs, was epic in length, going on
80 minutes, Desert
Opuses relies
on scope. It’s 40 minutes of brilliant psych-rock released on 140-gram
gold vinyl and mastered by John Golden (Melvins, Sonic Youth, Comets on
Fire). From the brooding lead off, “Mountains of the Pharaohs,” which
feature marching beats, eastern melodies and a bad-ass, stoner-rock
riff, to the harmonica-laden, space-rock mind-blower “The Ruins of the
Pyramids,” Desert Opuses is another potent psych mix that’s easy to get
lost in."
